Riixo: LJMU Study Findings about utilising Compression AND Ice after an intense bout of exercise

A team from LJMU, led by Dr David Low conducted a study to explore whether utilising Compression AND Ice after an intense bout of exercise was more beneficial than compression alone. They chose to use our product in that study. This study is being built upon during the 2022/23 academic year.

Participants (all healthy) were subjected to a standardised protocol of exercise drills to replicate muscle damage brought on by a period of intense exercise effort.

They were split into 3 groups:

Control – A sham ultrasound treatment to allow for any placebo effect

Compression – Sleeves designed for recovery from the market leading brand

Compression + Ice – Riixo Recovery Cuffs in “Ice” mode

Participants returned to the lab after 24, 48 & 72 hours. A number of standardised performance tests were undertaken the results of which were analysed and reported.

Significantly Less Muscle Soreness in the Riixo Group

Participants graded their pain according to the VAS standard.

At all timepoints over the 72 hr recovery period, the Riixo Recovery cuffs were seen to outperform both the Control and the Compression groups.

The outperformance was significant at 48 and 72 hours.

After 72 hours the muscle soreness experience by Riixo participants had returned to baseline whereas the Control and Compression groups were still elevated. 

Faster Recovery of Muscle Power

Muscle power measured by using Vertical Jump Heights (VJH) at 24, 48 & 72 hours.

At all timepoints the group using Riixo Recovery cuffs suffered less impairment, and thus were deemed to have recovered muscle power faster than both the Control and the Compression groups.

Outperformance was significant at 24, and 72 hours compared to both groups and significantly better than the Control Group at 48 hours also.

After 72 hours the Riixo VJH had recovered whilst the other groups remained c. -4 cms. 

Improved Recovery of Endurance Performance in a 1 mile Time Trial

The result differed over a longer distance.

Participant were measured, at 24 & 72 hrs over a 1-mile time trial on a treadmill. Time was blinded but pace could be adjusted.

Control & Compression group performance deteriorated from the baseline measure whereas the Riixo group performance improved.

At the 72 hour point, the Riixo group was 11.9% faster than baseline whilst the Control and Compression groups were 5.5% and 6.2% slower respectively.
