“There was a 17.4 million peak audience watching the Women’s EURO 2022 final between England and Germany on BBC One, leaving it stand as the most watched programme in the UK so far in 2022.

“Further to that, a record crowd of 87,192 entered Wembley Stadium to watch, making it the largest attendance at any EUROs game (women’s or men’s).

“When I was growing up, never in my wildest dreams would I have ever imagined women’s football to be placed on such a stage. I have played international fixtures on park pitches and Champions League fixtures to empty stadiums. Seeing the growth of women’s football in the last ten years, first hand, has been nothing short of phenomenal.

“This EUROs tournament, and especially that historical England win last night, has inspired a whole generation of young female footballers, who now know that their wildest dreams of competing professionally and in front of sell-out crowds, could one day become a reality.

“I just wish that I was 10-year-old again right now!

“England winning the EUROs though, has also captivated a nation. Not just the young girls, but an entire nation of passionate English women and men who, after a tough couple of years, finally have something major to celebrate in sport.

“I saw young boys crying with joy, ‘University lads’ jumping for joy, Grandma’s heckling the referee and girls in heels singing for Ella Toone. The atmosphere was something I have never experienced before in my life and I loved every second.

“There is no doubt in my mind that women’s football, and women’s sport in general will continue to grow. The Women’s EUROs 2022 has given me severe hope for the future and I am confident that the EUROs legacy will drive changes in providing more opportunities for girls to excel in sport.

“Here’s to women’s sport, our growing audience, and our phenomenal athletes.”
