From tumbling records in Berlin to gold medals in Spain to the Laver Cup trophy: On athletes impress with top results

40-year-old Tadesse Abraham runs the fastest Marathon time ever in On shoes and storms to a new Swiss record, para-triathlete Martin Schulz claims gold at the 2023 World Triathlon Paratriathlon Championships, and Ben Shelton wins the Laver Cup as part of Team World.

 

Zurich, Switzerland, September 25, 2023 – A busy September weekend resulted in lots of memorable moments for On athletes.

Road Running – Tadesse Abraham enters the history books at the Berlin Marathon

The Berlin Marathon proved to be an ideal location for many of the Swiss sportswear brand’s road runners. Not only did several of the On athletes on start set new personal records, but also a national and even a world record went tumbling.

Leading the charge was Swiss veteran Tadesse Abraham. The 40-year-old had an incredible run that resulted in a new personal best of 2:05:10, which improved his standing Swiss record from the Zurich Marathon in 2022 by over a minute. At the same time, this was a new Masters world record for over 40-year-olds and the fastest Marathon in On shoes yet.

On the women’s side, Ethiopian Helen Bekele Tola ran a new personal best of 2:19:44 hours and finished in eighth. She became the first female marathon runner in On Shoes under 2 hours and 20 minutes.

On top of that, three additional On athletes established new PBs yesterday: Newly-signed Samuel Fitwi was the second-fastest German finisher and improved his personal best by four minutes (2:08:28). Fellow German Konstantin Wedel ran a new personal record of 2:12:39, and Ati Nianzhe was the second-fastest Chinese in the field and finished with a new personal best of  2:13:14.

Triathlon – Martin Schulz and Lisa Tertsch with strong results in Pontevedra

The triathlon community converged in Pontevedra in Spain, where the World Triathlon Series Grand Finals, as well as the 2023 World Triathlon Paratriathlon and U23 Championships, took place.

On athlete Martin Schulz shone with a brilliant performance in the PT5 category and claimed the World Championship title. In the men’s U23 category, young gun Panagiotis Bitados from Greece finished fourth in his very first U23 World Championships.

Germany’s Lisa Tertsch added a fourth place in the World Triathlon Series Grand Final to her resume and automatically qualifies for Paris 2024 with this result. She finished in 01:54:01, less than a minute behind winner Beth Potter. Her On teammate Julie Derron was eighth (01:54:14), Petra Kurikova 38th (01:58:34). On the men’s side, Kristian Blummenfelt was 18th, and Rostyslav Pevtsov was 39th.

Tennis – Team World rules Laver Cup 2023

Ben Shelton helped Team World to defend their Laver Cup title from last year in Vancouver, adding Laver Cup Champion to his merit list in the process. The John McEnroe-coached “World” squad defended their title with a commanding 13-2 win in Canada.

On the back of his US Open semi-final run, 20-year-old Shelton defeated Frenchman Arthur Fils in the opening singles match, giving Team World its first point on Friday. After a string of great Team World performances, Shelton also delivered the decisive point together with doubles partner Frances Tiafoe as they saw off Hubert Hurkacz and Andrey Rublev in the opening doubles on Sunday.
