ActiveTrainingWorld: ATW’s 2022 by James Shipley

“Our 2022 event calendar is now complete and what a year ATW has had!”

We have been involved with 172 events this year and organised around 100 open-water swimming sessions. This year we firmly placed ourselves as the largest UK multisport company by organising more triathlons than anyone else has ever done, including 4 major BTF World and European qualifier events. In fact, around 15% of people that took part in a triathlon event anywhere in the UK did so at an ATW organised event!!! We have also added trail events and Canicross events into our event portfolio meaning we are now reaching even more communities.

We organised the Watford Half Marathon for the first time this year and also agreed the acquisitions of Hoohaah Trail Events and the Bedford Running Festival. We also agreed a contract to organise events at Mallory Park Race Circuit in 2023 which the team are really excited about.

My own personal highlight was taking part in the Middlesex Triathlon myself. I had no input into organising that event in any way and left my wonderful team to do everything from launching the event, to doing all the paperwork, marketing, communications and event delivery. I can hand on my heart say that the ATW Team have taken every aspect of event delivery to a level I would never be able to achieve myself. The event looked fantastic, was organised to perfection and received only positive feedback from the competitors. I am truly blessed to have such a wonderful team that love events as much as I do!

I would also like to say a huge thanks to all of the event marshals, race officials, medics, photographers, commentators, kayakers and lake support teams that have been with us every week of the year. Over 1100 different people have marshalled an ATW event or helped at our open water swim sessions over the last couple of years. It’s a staggering number and I can’t thank them enough for all they bring to our amazing community.

Looking ahead to 2023 I am most excited about delivering 8 major BTF events which I was told recently is a record number for an event organiser. I am also looking forward to building new communities at Mallory Park and Hoohaah Trail events. Finally, I can’t finish speaking about 2023 without mentioning the ATW Odyssey long-distance triathlon! This will be the first time ATW has organised an iron distance triathlon event and we intend to make this event a real spectacle!

My final thank you is to everyone who has swam, ran, biked or walked with us this year. Whatever your reason for joining us on a start line or at the lake I thank you for choosing ATW. It’s no secret that I love my job and I genuinely enjoy spending my weekends with you all and watching you achieve your own personal goals.

I hope to see you all very soon in 2023!
