Alliance Member – Honolulu Marathon
The Honolulu Marathon, established in 1973, has grown to become the fourth largest marathon in the United States. Held annually in December, this event draws participants from all over the world. The marathon is renowned for its spectacular course, which weaves through some of Honolulu’s most scenic areas, including the iconic Waikiki Beach, the historic downtown district, and the lush surroundings of Diamond Head.
One of the unique aspects of the Honolulu Marathon is its appeal to first-time marathoners. Unlike many other marathons, there is no time limit, allowing runners of all abilities to participate and finish at their own pace. Finish times can vary widely, with the fastest runners completing the course in just over 2 hours, while others may take up to 17 hours. This inclusive approach creates a supportive and encouraging environment for all participants, whether they are elite athletes or casual runners.
In addition to the full marathon, the Honolulu Marathon weekend features several other events. One of the highlights is the 10km event, which starts at the same time as the marathon. This allows participants who may not be ready for the full marathon distance to still experience the excitement and atmosphere of race day.
The weekend of events begins with the Kalakaua Merrie Mile, a one-mile race held the day before the marathon. This race is open to everyone, from seasoned runners to families and children, making it a truly inclusive event. Following the open race, a professional race is held, attracting top milers from around the world to compete in a fast and thrilling event.
The Honolulu Marathon Association also organizes The Hapalua – Hawaii’s Half Marathon and the King’s Runner 10k, held in April and March respectively.
